PhD Scholarship - Rail Maintenance Optimisation

July 12, 2015 - 6:34pm
Coal and iron ore export supply chains critically depend on the transport capacity provided by Australia's rail infrastructure. Increasingly so, because coal and iron ore export supply chains are literally getting longer: mineral bodies closer to ports have been exploited first, and as these become exhausted, supply chains are stretching further to reach harder-to-get-at resources. Combined with increasing export volumes, this makes intelligent, efficient, and effective management of this critical piece of infrastructure vitally important.

Men@Work PhD Scholarship

June 29, 2015 - 6:21pm
The School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is offering a PhD scholarship for a student wanting to develop and test a new online mental health training program for managers. This project will be part of a larger program of research, called ‘Men@Work’, which is focused on developing new e-health technologies to improve the mental health of male workers. The proposed new manager training would focus on educating managers about how mental illness may present in male employees and teaching them how they can modify work-based risk factors, such as job demands and control. The use of e-health technology will allow this resource to be rolled out nationally and will create an ongoing resource that can be used beyond this particular project. The PhD student will be supervised by Dr Samuel Harvey and will be part of the Workplace Mental Health Research Team based at UNSW and the Black Dog Institute.

PhD Scholarship - Mining Big Stream Data

May 29, 2015 - 6:28pm
Data is becoming the world’s new natural resource and big data use grows quickly. The trend of computing technology is that everything is merged into the Internet and ‘big data’ are integrated to comprise complete information for collective intelligence. Sensors and human beings become two major contributors for big stream data. With the increasing data size of streams, re-representing raw big stream data using only critical data (or useful information) resolves the problems of big data sharing and transportation on the Internet; that is, we use a small sized summary of the original big stream data to directly answer users’ queries. This, for example, enables cloud computing for big stream data mining, where the mining process can be separated into two steps: the refine step to change raw big data into small-sized data summary, and the application-oriented mining step to discover desired knowledge further for various applications from well-defined data summary.

PhD Scholarship in Innovation Economics

May 29, 2015 - 6:28pm
Australia is seeing rapid investment by city governments in public Wi-Fi networks but there has been little research conducted on the policy, economic, social and technological aspects of this development. This scholarship provides a unique opportunity for a student with an aptitude for econometric modeling to work on the socio-economic impacts of different internet access technologies, including public Wi-Fi, within urban settings. The research project aims to critically analyze theories that public wireless internet promotes innovation and change, and examine these claims as a rationale for public investment in Wi-Fi. The student will work with economists, technologists and urban studies scholars at RMIT University on a cutting-edge project in an area of national and international importance.

Existing research on coherent assessment is scarce, with most assessment research focusing on small scale or single-unit innovations. This project aims to build robust evidence on coherent assessment from existing, large-scale, excellent assessment practice. Research questions will broadly be of the form "what works, for whom, and under what circumstances" with respect to coherent assessment. This project aims to provide useful evidence to inform assessment research, practice and policy.

ARC PhD Scholarship in Linkage of Innovative Off-site Housing Manufacture

May 25, 2015 - 3:19pm
The Australian housing industry is failing to meet demand. Housing construction is too slow, as indicated by a 40 per cent increase in average construction time over the last fifteen years. The housing industry is inefficient. Industry fragmentation is an oft-cited cause of construction inefficiency. A solution is offsite manufacturing. Australia lags other countries in adoption of offsite manufacturing. To achieve adoption and diffusion we need to address fragmentation. This project will analyse the factors affecting supply chain integration to support innovative offsite manufacturing and develop a novel collaborative practice based implementation model.
